Macha Irish war goddess, she first married Nemain, a Scythian ruler who defeated the Formorii, the sea gods who killed her second husband Nuada and herself in a later battle. It is said that Macha laid a curse on Ulster after her husband had boasted that, though pregnant, she could out run all the King's horses and charriots. When the King of Ulster threatened to excecute her husband if she did not race, Macha cursed all Ulstermen to suffer the pain of childbirth for five days whenever the kindom was in danger. Macha won the race and gave birth to twins.
