In the 16th century, the Dauphin of France gave Mary Queen of Scots a betrothal brooch to celebrate their marriage and The Royal Mile in Edinburgh had a variety of "locked booths" - Luckenbooths -selling jewellery. The goldsmiths made a Luckenbooth Brooch that featured interlocking hearts and a crown; it was given by a young man to his betrothed and later when the couple had their first child, this brooch would be pinned onto the baby's shawl to ward off evil spirits.
