The design is based on the new two pence coin, which was decimalised in 1971.
It was made in bronze.
The coin was designed by the Irish artist Gabriel Hayes and the design is adapted from the Second Bible of Charles the Bald (Holy Roman Emperor 823 - 877AD), held at Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris.
The coin was 1/50 of an Irish Pound and was withdrawn on the advent of the Euro.
