Athenry

Athenry, fifteen miles east of Galway city, has a past that goes back several millennia.

The only restored Norman castle in Ireland by Meiler de Bermingham, 2nd Baron of Athenry and founder of the town, who built it in c.1250.

Afterwards he built a stunning Priory and presented it to the Dominican friars.

The original Mace & Seal of the town, commemorating the Battle of Athenry in 1316 can be seen on exhibition in the Athenry Heritage Centre

The song 'The Fields of Athenry' is practically a national
anthem at international rugby and football matches.
Sung when we're winning of course.
