Deirdre:
According to the myths, Deirdre was the cause
of Ulster's sorrows. The druids fortold this before she was born and
also of her great beauty. King Conchobhar wanted to marry her even though
his was quite old, but Deirdre wouldn't have him and ran away with Naoise.
After many years, the King tricked them into returning to Ulster on
the understanding that no harm would come to them. Then he killed Naoise
and forced Deirdre to marry him. However once married Deirdre remained
sad and kept her distance from the King, with the result that he handed
her over to the killer of Naoise. Rather than suffer that fate, she
threw herself out of a speeding chariot and smashed her head on a rock.
From each of the graves of Naoise and Deirdre grew a pine, which eventually
intertwined and grew as a single tree.
