Celtic spirals - triskels and key patterns
home page
Ornamental symbols began with spirals. Then came chevrons and step patterns along with key patterns. After these came interlacing followed by knotwork interlacing. Great geometrical and mathematical skill was used in these patterns, from the earliest, 20,000 B.C. found in the Ukraine; to 6th century A.D. from East Pictland and Ireland, where the finest achievement of Celtic knotwork interlacings of the Pictish School were found. The imitation of of the works of God were forbidden to many races, so they concentrated upon geometry, mathmatics and abstracts that were not copies of created life. Until the Christian Era even vegatation was taboo as a motif for ornament.
