Mongan:
Son of the Manx sea god Mannanan Mac Lir, he inherited the divine ability to change shapes from his father, and used it to woo the ladies. His most famous exploit was the recovery of his 3rd wife Dub Lacha, from his ally Brandub, King of Leinster. Brandub had taken Dub Lacha for a year as his price in helping Mongan regain Ulster. All Mongan's shape shifting tricks to get his wife back were found out. It was only with the help of the hag Cuimne who transformed herself into a beautiful princess of Munster with a love spot on her cheek and was offered to Brandub in exchange for Dub Lacha, that she was released. As soon as she was safe, Cuimne turned back into her former self. |
Lacha:
Dub Lacha, beautiful daughter of Fiachna mac Baetain and wife of Mongan, was celebrated for her white arms. Brandub, King of Leinster coveted her and tricked Mongan into giving his wife to him. Mongan, however, a son of the Manx god Manannan mac Lir, got the help of the hag Cuimne and recovered her. Cuimne transformed herself into a beautiful woman and offered herself to Brandub in exchange; once Dub Lacha was free, Cuimne reverted to her former self. |
