A symbol of continunity, interlacing knotwork is found in the Books of Kells and Durrow, and the Lindisfarne Gospels (7th and 8th centuries), also on the ornamental slab stones and metal works of this period. The elaborate zoomorphic interlace was developed by the Irish monks, along with scrolls, spirals and motifs
