The Scottish Legend of the Thistle.
One night in the tenth century, a raiding party
of Vikings were creeping up on a Scottish encampment, when they revealed
their presence by yells when they stepped on the prickly thistles, and
were beaten off. Since then the early Kings of Scotland used the thistle
as their personal heraldic crest, which can now be seen in the Arms
of the Realm.
